Welcome, fellow off-road warriors! 🤠

The Suzuki LT80 Quadsport is a legendary machine, a two-stroke titan that has introduced countless young riders to the joys of ATVing.

But let’s be honest, that stock speed leaves a little something to be desired once you get a taste for the trail.

If you’re ready to unlock the hidden potential of this iconic quad, you’ve come to the right place. 🚀

This guide will walk you through the best upgrades to boost your Suzuki LT80’s top speed and acceleration.

Phase 1: Pre-Flight Checklist & Basic De-Restriction

Before you start bolting on new parts, let’s cover the basics. 🛠️

A well-maintained machine will always perform better.

Ensure your air filter is clean, your spark plug is fresh, and you’re using high-quality two-stroke oil.

Many LT80s came from the factory with restrictors to limit their speed for young riders.

Check for a throttle limiter screw, which is easy to adjust, and a washer in the exhaust header pipe that can be removed to open up the airflow significantly.

Removing these factory limiters is the true first step to unlocking power and can get a well-serviced LT80 up to around 30 mph!

Phase 2: The “Bang for Your Buck” Bolt-On Mods 💰

Now we get to the fun part: adding hardware!

These modifications are relatively simple and provide the most noticeable gains without needing to split the engine cases.

Your goal here is to improve the engine’s ability to breathe and to change how it puts power to the ground.

“To say I was really disapointed would be an understatement. After removing the two rollers from the front drive, and getting such a huge change for the better, I was all excited…”

One of the single biggest improvements you can make is changing the gearing.

Switching from the stock 520 O-ring chain to a lighter 428 pitch chain reduces drag and frees up horsepower.

Combine this with different sprocket sizes, like a 13-tooth front sprocket, to increase your final drive ratio for a higher top speed.

Upgrade Component Primary Benefit Estimated Gain Difficulty
Speed Gearing Kit (428 Chain/Sprockets) Top Speed ⚡ 3-5 MPH Medium
Performance Exhaust (e.g., DG Pipe) Acceleration & Mid-Range Power 1-2 MPH (more with jetting) Easy
Boyesen Power Reeds Throttle Response & Bottom End 1 MPH (improves power delivery) Medium
High-Flow Air Filter & Re-Jet Horsepower & Throttle Response 1-2 MPH (essential with pipe) Easy-Medium

Pairing these mods together is key. 💡

A performance pipe from a brand like DG Performance will do very little without also upgrading your intake with better reeds and a high-flow air filter, and then re-jetting the carburetor to match.

List of Essential Bolt-On Parts

 suzuki lt80 top speed upgrade
  • Gearing Kit: This is non-negotiable for top speed. Kits from specialists like Midwest Mini are a great starting point.
  • Performance Reeds: Boyesen dual-stage reeds are a classic upgrade for two-strokes, improving throttle response and overall power delivery.
  • Exhaust System: An aftermarket pipe helps the engine exhale better, which is crucial for making more power. Remember, more noise doesn’t always mean more speed!
  • Intake & Jetting: A Uni or K&N style filter lets more air in. You MUST install a larger main jet in the carburetor to provide more fuel, otherwise, you risk running lean and damaging your engine.

Phase 3: Advanced Tuning for Maximum Velocity 🚀

If the bolt-ons still haven’t quenched your thirst for speed, it’s time to dive into the transmission and engine internals. ⚙️

This is where the magic really happens, but it requires more mechanical skill.

The LT80 uses a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with clutch rollers in the front variator.

By removing two of the six rollers, you allow the engine to rev higher before the clutch engages, dramatically improving acceleration.

This is a popular and effective free mod!

For the ultimate in performance, you’ll need to turn to engine porting.

Experts like the renowned Jack Moore can modify the cylinder to optimize airflow, which allows the engine to spin to an incredible 13,000 RPM and achieve speeds over 60 MPH on racing setups!

This level of modification often includes shaving the cylinder head for more compression and potentially a big bore kit to increase displacement to 90cc.

“Jack Moore is a great LT 80 engine builder… He has had LT80 do over 60 MPH on the TT tracks back there…… insane :D”

Of course, with more speed comes the need for better handling and safety. 📌

Consider investing in wheel spacers for a wider, more stable stance and upgraded shocks from a company like Yoshimura or Works Performance to handle the extra speed on rough terrain.

Don’t forget to maintain your brakes! Check out official parts diagrams and safety info from Suzuki’s official site.
