Learning how to properly strap down your UTV on a trailer is not just a suggestion; it’s a critical skill for safety and protecting your investment.

Before you even think about touching a strap, let’s talk about placement.

The goal is to properly distribute the UTV’s weight on the trailer.

This “tongue weight” (typically 10-15% of the total trailer weight) is crucial for preventing dangerous trailer sway at high speeds. 💨

Drive your UTV onto the trailer and park it in the correct position.

Put your UTV in park (or in gear for manual transmissions) and engage the parking brake.

Step 2: Choosing Your Weapon – The Right Straps

Not all straps are created equal. 💡

For a heavy machine like a UTV, you need high-quality, heavy-duty ratchet straps.

Look for straps with a “Working Load Limit” (WLL) that is at least half of your UTV’s total weight.

Using four straps is the industry standard, so ensure their combined WLL far exceeds the weight of your machine.

Step 3: The Four-Point Tie-Down Technique

The most reliable method is the four-point tie-down, creating an “X” pattern at both the front and rear of the UTV.

This prevents forward, backward, and side-to-side movement.

Crucially, you should attach the straps to the UTV’s frame or another non-moving part of the chassis.

Never attach hooks to suspension components like A-arms or axles!

Attach one strap to the right-front of the UTV frame and run it to an anchor point on the left-front of the trailer.

Do the opposite for the other front strap, creating the “X”.

Repeat this process for the rear of the UTV.

Tighten the ratchet straps until the UTV’s suspension is slightly compressed. This ensures the machine is snug and won’t bounce independently of the trailer.

Once you’re all strapped in, do a final check. Shake the UTV vigorously.

It should move as one unit with the trailer.
